So you know how children have a difficult time when their parents separate, well Cooper appears to be going through that now. My wife recently took a trip to Kansas City for an adoption conference, and after a few days of her getting back it became clear she had COVID. So, I am back in the back bedroom again (again because she had COVID before) and Cooper thinks we have divorced. He just looks at me with these really sad eyes and follows me around where ever I go. He never brings the ball anymore and he has stopped playing. Tomorrow, I am let back in to my wife’s bedroom, so hopefully he will go back to normal and be the annoying pooch he is known for.

The nice thing about getting senile is you can watch your favorite sitcoms over and over again. I like 30 Rock, and after I watch the 7th season I can start all over again not remembering anything from before, and enjoy it like it was the first time. See, there are advantages to getting old.

Ok, it has been a week since Cooper and I have had our adult talk. So far it does not look promising.

“Cooper, remember now, you are an adult and you are going to require us to play with you less”.

“Oh yea, I can play a lot less, really a lot less. Why, I can go the whole day without playing. We are still going to play fetch though, aren’t we? I love playing fetch. I can play fetch all day without a break. Yea, do you want me to show you? Here is the ball. Ruff, ruff, in case you didn’t know that is the sign to throw the ball. Ruff, ruff. Ok, do we have to have this talk again? I told you when I go ruff twice that means you throw the ball.”

“Cooper, I am trying to explain that I can’t play all day, I have things to do.”

“Well, I have things to do to you know, now, Ruff, ruff. You know I can do this forever, so do you want to get on the ball?”

“Yes, sorry”

This is an interpretation of a conversation between me and Cooper…

Me: “Cooper, you have to understand that you are now 2 years of age and please sit down, you are no       longer a puppy.”

Cooper: “Wow, that means I am a grown up dog, but can I still play, because I love to play, you know I really love to play. I love to fetch the ball and bark at the birds and squirrels and I love to just play.”

Me: “Well, Coop, you can still play, you just can’t play all the time. I mean, we need breaks now and then, and you keep bringing us that ball and bark at us until we throw it, and after about 45 minutes we get tired.”

Cooper: “Ok, so after 40 minutes I should give you a 5 minute break. Because I can do that, I am an adult now, and I can even give you a 6 minute break. I do not need to play all the time.”
